Two friends are filming a movie in Bolivian lands: Sebastian (Gael García Bernal), the director, is interested in reflecting the true story of Christopher Columbus, a story away from the official version that appears in books on the subject. Here he casts the conqueror as a man interested in gold and slaves. Then there is Costa, The film's producer and close friend of Sebastian. Their motivations are different, because unlike Sebastian, he wants the film is finished anyway, even if it means paying pitiful wages to extras Bolivians. Similarly, while filming the movie, in Bolivia there is an event leading to the uprising of the people: the Water War. A private company has taken control of water and charges prices that few can afford. Interestingly, Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri), Indian actor who plays the film Sebastian becomes the leader of the revolt. Costa tries to avoid by all means that Daniel is involved in war, because if you stop will not stop the film. Past and present, fiction and reality blend and take shape through the decisions and the confrontation between two young men whose conscience will guide them to where they had never imagined.
